Research Professorship

Since 2019, the Kindness for Kids endowed professorship for healthcare research in the field of rare diseases in childhood has existed at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf. It is the first and so far only professorship in Germany dedicated to this topic.

Healthcare research is an interdisciplinary field of research that examines, evaluates, and improves the quality and efficiency of healthcare with the aim of supporting evidence-based decisions in medicine, healthcare and politics. A broad spectrum of topics will be investigated, such as access to care, quality of care, effectiveness of therapies and procedures and patient satisfaction.

The aim of the research professorship is therefore to address cross-disease issues and thus sustainably improve the quality of life of children with rare diseases and their families. The foundation is funding the professorship for five years.

Prof. Dr. Laura Inhestern, who has been a member of the working group - Health Services Research in Rare Diseases in Childhood - for many years, has held the position as a junior professor since September 2022. She succeeded Prof. Dr. Bergelt, who is now working in Greifswald.
